Seems as if holiday parties give us license to load on the eye makeup. Smokey eyes, coats and coats of waterproof mascara, dramatic sweeps with eyeliner. But at the end of the evening, we want it all off: swiftly, thoroughly and without stinging. Three testers gave their lids a swab with formulas designed for a clean sweep. Did they work or were the gals left with raccoon eyes? Stila Petal Fusions Eye Makeup dissolver, $20 for 90 pads, Sephora • "I've tried a whole slew of concoctions in my time, including plain soap, cold cream and liquid removers. I don't wear much makeup, so it shouldn't be a huge challenge." • "The smell was very nice — a pleasant little rose scent, not too strong....

Bathroom lighting options will dazzle you

Bathroom lighting is my current project, as I have two bathrooms that are being completely remodeled. What bathroom lighting fixtures have you had success with in your jobs? Can I install one of those nifty makeup light and mirror fixtures that I often see in hotel bathrooms, or are those only permitted in commercial buildings? I don't know if there's a silver bullet when it comes to bathroom lighting and fixtures. There are many wonderful options, and I think your biggest problem is going to be limiting your selections to just a few. When you visit a real lighting supply house, one that just sells lighting fixtures, I predict you will develop a mild headache from the mind-numbing array of delightful lighting fixtures. I've had some successes with bathroom lighting, both in my own home and on many of the jobs I've completed over the years....

The model's white-blond hair is carefully sectioned and tied together with tiny bands, creating an intricate diamond pattern all across the scalp. The perfect latticework draws the eye to a halo of curls surrounding her head. "I chose looks that were powerful," said hairstylist Maureen Anlauf. "For me, it was about geometry — shapes on shapes." The diamond pattern is called "the grid," and it's one of five stunning looks created by a team that included hairstylist Anlauf, 34, and makeup artist Angelia Senevisai, 38 — two Minneapolis women who took top honors this past summer at the North American Hairstyling Awards, considered the Oscars of the beauty industry. The Shelf Life of Makeup

Everyone knows that eye infections can be caused by sharing eye cosmetics, but did you know that bacteria develops in your eye makeup over time just from exposure to moisture and air? Take mascara, for instance: Each application introduces bacteria not only to the wand, but pushes it inside the tube. As you push the wand inside the tube, you increase the amount of air, which creates a breeding ground for bacteria. From the moment makeup is opened, this cycle begins, and the clock is ticking. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that powders and eye shadows be discarded after two years and eyeliner, lip liner, lipstick, concealer and foundations be replaced after one year. Mascara has the shortest shelf life of all makeup -- dermatologists suggest discarding within three months....

Tips to Help Makeup Last Longer

Summertime makeup routines call for a clean and natural look but makeup meltdown can occur with even the most minimal amount of makeup. Heat, humidity, an active lifestyle and an individuals skin type are several factors that affect the longevity of makeup. But keeping a fresh-faced look does not need to be a constant struggle thanks to the use of some helpful products. Waterproof mascara choose a brown for blondes and redheads and a brown-black for brunettes. Choose a soft black for very deep skin tones only.
