DAYTONA BEACH -- Scrapping the Staten Island track project slashed fourth-quarter profit at International Speedway Corp. by $47 million, shaving full-year earnings for the motorsports company by 27 percent. Speedway executives reported Thursday that net income for the September-November period of 2006 slipped to $7.8 million, or 15 cents a share, down sharply from the $116.8 million or $1.03 per share, recorded in the same period of 2005. That meant that ISC, owner of Daytona International Speedway and 10 other tracks, finished its 2006 fiscal year with $116.8 million in net income, equal to $2.19 a share. The previous year, its profits were $159.4 million, or $2.99 a share. If the Staten Island setback hadn't dragged down earnings by some $87 million, ISC would have achieved a full-year profit of $172 million, an 8 percent increase, John Saunders, chief operating officer, told investment analysts in a conference call....

One woman shaved her head after her friend was diagnosed with cancer, leading to a new definition of beauty. Erika Hobart The Daily Evergreen It started when Star Sherman heard that freshmen on mens rowing teams shaved their heads as part of a traditional initiation process at some colleges. When her friend Tara Clarke underwent chemotherapy for brain cancer, Star promised shed go through with shaving her head to show her support. I couldnt do it at the time because of my summer job, said Star, now a senior psychology and sociology major at WSU. But once I was finished with work, I shaved my head. HOME AGAIN

Every day, even during that frightening chase across Europe in 1945, Pete Dilsaver would open his shaving kit to check the photo. Sometimes he didn't have time to shave, but he would open the case anyway. The photo under his shaving mirror was of his wife and brand-new baby back in America. If he made it through the war, he would see them again. And there were memorable times during that race into Germany and the surrender of the Nazis. One of the most frightening, the one Dilsaver thought might end it all for him, involved the bridge across the Moselle River when they found the bombs strapped to the underside of the bridge. The Army sent in Dilsaver to diffuse the bombs, to cut the wire, to make it safe again, to keep the Allies moving toward Berlin....

School administrators do some wacky things to reward their students: working on a roof, being stuck to a wall with duct tape, shaving their heads. Add this to the list: Whitcomb Elementary School's principal, Sid Ong, and counselor, Ellen Baltus, allowed students to splash them with buckets of water Oct. 27 in a "car wash." The 87 students who sold at least $100 in products for the school's annual fundraiser got a chance to douse Ong and Baltus, who were behind a cardboard cutout of a car. The school raised about $11,000 for field trips and library books by selling items such as gift wrap, stationery and chocolate. That's about $5,000 more than they usually raise, Ong said. "It's important," Ong said. "We can't do field trips or buy library books without it." BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Strict new security measures on hand baggage come into effect across European airports today (Monday), curbing the amount of liquids passengers can bring with them on board planes. New restrictions on the size of carry-on luggage will also be introduced, starting April 17, 2007. The 25-nation European Union agreed to tighten airport security measures after British authorities said in August they had broken up a plot to bring down U.S.-bound flights with liquid-based explosives. The new rules will limit passengers to carrying no more than 100 milliliters (a fifth of a pint) of liquid per container. All such containers should fit into a clear re-sealable plastic bag to be presented at security checkpoints. All liquids will be subject to security checks prior to boarding planes and include not only water and soft drinks, but also soups, creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, sprays, gels, toothpaste and shaving cream....

Lasers Over Razors: Dr. Gene Rubinstein Reveals That More Blades ...

Los Angeles, CA (FV Newswire) - As popular razor companies keep adding more and more blades to their razors every few years, dermatologist Dr. Gene Rubinstein has been noticing another trend: men shaving too close! Razor companies seem to think the closer the shave the better. Just look at the ever increasing razor advertisements boasting four and five bladed razors, as well as vibrating razors that shave even closer. While more blades do mean a closer shave, it also makes men more susceptible to skin problems. "The latest shaving razors with multiple blades actually shave so close that they cut hairs below the surface of the skin," says Dr. Rubinstein. These razors will actually pull the hair out of the skin a little before trimming it. "When this happens the skin can close over the hair follicle, trapping the hair....

Don't laugh, they'll think you are mad

It's the end of your first day away, and you're in a restaurant of your own spontaneous choosing; with an indulgent half smile you recall those interminable dining deliberations among a committee of family or other companions that would otherwise have been endured. You've got two guidebooks and a great big 16-fold map open on the table, both because there's the space and because no one's here to tell you off for ignoring them. The same absence of company means you've been able to enjoy a soul-warming sufficiency of some hearty local vintage without any furious round-table lobbying for alcohol that's less red, or more fizzy, or that doesn't arrive at the table by smudged vase. That in-transit malaise melts away, taking with it the niggling pressures of domestic and professional life; casting a contented eye across the crumpled cartography before you, across the exhilarating otherness of your fellow diners, a heady, liberated wanderlust takes hold....
