| Beautiful birch's peels and appeal endure winter | | Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 2:51:18 PM by Blog57 Team | | There are very few trees that can be accurately identified in winter with just the most cursory of glances. Even from the windows of a car driving along at 60 miles per hour, any person can immediately pick out the trunks of white birches from the darker oaks, maples, hickories and other deciduous trees growing in the bare woods of winter. It takes a few years of practice for a naturalist to become adept at identifying all of the approximately 75 species of Pocono trees in their winter condition. But anyone can call one of our two species of white birches. The gray, or little white, birch is the more common of the two in Pennsylvania. It grows from Nova Scotia, down through New England and eastern New York and into Pennsylvania and most of New Jersey. Although its bark is white, it never peels or curls loosely from the trunk like that of its larger relative.... | |

| | | Winter tuneup begins with skin, hair and lip care | | Posted Sunday, December 24, 2006 2:51:14 PM by Blog57 Team | | Attention winter sports enthusiasts: Time to begin your conditioning. You might have started your cardio and thigh-strengthening exercises already, but what about your outdoor skin-saving routine? Remember, your hair and skin are the front line against the elements when you're out skiing, sledding or skating. That's why sunscreen is still a must every day, says Dr. Kathy Fields, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at University of California-San Francisco. ''The sun is up and shining, even on a snowy day. If you see light there are UVA rays; they can cause cancer and will cause wrinkles,'' she says. ''Sunscreen should be a habit, like brushing your teeth.'' Fields, a co-founder of the skin care line Rodan & Fields, encourages use of sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor of 30 or above, and one with a base of either zinc oxide, mexoryl or avobenzone, as opposed to titanium dioxide formulas, which she says are weaker -- though those are recommended for babies or adults with sensitive skin.... | |

| | | A face-saving guide to make-up | | Posted Monday, November 27, 2006 12:55:18 PM by Blog57 Team | | THE news that the British cosmetics market is now worth £1 billion will come as no surprise to those of us who do battle with a bulging make-up bag each morning. Yet, while most beauty product addicts won't have batted a mascara-coated lash at this statistic, or consumer trends watchdog Mintel's revelation that British women now spend more on beauty products than their European counterparts, it makes you wonder how many of your recent beauty buys have actually been good value? Because for most of us, even the most cursory glance through our make-up bag will reveal unused flaky foundations, off-colour concealers and an array of lipsticks which disappear at the first sign of a cup of coffee. .... | |

| | | The Westchester adds luxury, innovation to its retail roster | | Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 12:59:39 PM by Blog57 Team | | New retailers are moving into The Westchester, the upscale mall on the outskirts of downtown White Plains that continues to grow along with the city, the economy and Americans' appetite for high-end retail. Merchants say the venue is ideal for drawing sophisticated suburbanites who might otherwise shop in Manhattan. The latest addition is Barneys New York CO-OP, set to open on Thursday. This week, the aroma of freshly carved wood filled the air as the design team worked alongside carpenters to set up the Soho-chic emporium. Next door, the newly opened Stuart Weitzman boutique showcased everything from leopard-skin platform shoes and evening styles to classic pumps and waterproof winter boots in the latest silhouettes. As she helped her mother shop for evening shoes, 5-year-old Christienne Bures of Croton-on-Hudson inspected the soles of an opened-toed sandal coated with bead-size Sworski crystals.... | |

| | | Rocky Mountain High? Pot Issue On Ballot In Colorado | | Posted Thursday, October 26, 2006 12:51:11 PM by Blog57 Team | | Denver, Colorado (AHN) - Voters could sway either way on amendment 44, in Colorado. The proposal would legalize the possession of one ounce or less of marijuana by a person over 21 years of age. A poll sponsored by 9News on September 28 showed 29 per cent of voters approve, 36 per cent say they will vote no. But the poll shows 35 per cent saying they are undecided. Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation launched the campaign to legalize pot after a successful initiative in Denver last year. "Law enforcement should not have to worry about a person smoking a joint in their own house," said Mason Tvert, SAFER's campaign director. Not everyone agrees with Tvert and his group, which promotes marijuana as a healthier and safer alternative to alcohol use.... | |

| | | A big focus for fall is mascara | | Posted Saturday, October 21, 2006 6:50:14 PM by Blog57 Team | | If our eyes are the windows to the world, then mascara makes the world a lot more beautiful. And this fall more than ever. Beauty experts agree that mascara is making a lot of eye contact with women. Over the summer, it dominated makeup trend conversations from New York to Los Angeles. And why not? Women love it when their eyes stand out. Lucky for us, just about every major cosmetics company has introduced a new mascara for fall. Some tout new technology, such as better brushes and formulas. Others offer goof-proof, smudge-proof promises. And everyone is buying it. Sales of prestige brands of mascara (i.e., department store labels such as Lancome and Chanel) were more than $244 million in 2005, an 8 percent increase, according to the NPD Group, which tracks consumer spending.... | |

| | | Fire Patrol Members Face End of 200-Year Run | | Posted Monday, October 02, 2006 12:51:01 PM by Blog57 Team | | The 100-year anniversary of the Fire Patrol house on West 3rd Street could have been a reason to celebrate. Many of the patrolmen have been in the neighborhood for decades. Among local restaurants and businesses, the patrolmen and their characteristic red hats are considered friends as well as a protective force. They aren't the Fire Department, but they are just as good at helping when a small fire breaks out, a pipe bursts, or a scuffle in front of a bar threatens the calm of the historic Greenwich Village streets. Looming over the barbecue atmosphere in front of the station house yesterday was a date, October 15, which will mark the end of the city's 98-man force after more than 200 years in New York City. The insurance companies that fund the Fire Patrol to protect commercial assets voted last month to disband it because they no longer consider the patrol worth the cost.... | |
