THERE are few things in life that really shock me. Perhaps I'm just liberal . . or endearingly naive, as one friend describes me. Or perhaps working in the media has occasionally opened my eyes to the harsh reality of real life - which often isn't pretty. But at the weekend, I was shocked. Naturally I had heard about it - but I actually saw it for the first time with my own eyes. ....

CANAAN VALLEY -- As Canaan Valley Resort celebrates its 35th year of skiing, state and company officials are looking ahead to the next several decades. "It's time for us to go to the next level," Gov. Joe Manchin said during a recent celebration at the resort's Bear Paw ski lodge. "I really think we can take it to a world-class level. We can have something you could never imagine seeing in West Virginia. We just have to figure out how to do it." The state Division of Natural Resources, in cooperation with current Canaan operator Guest Services Inc., has started a process that likely will lead to major changes -- perhaps $20 million worth including new guest rooms -- in the near future. Guest Services' management contract, which includes operation of the state park's conference center, guest rooms, golf course and ski slopes among other things, doesn't expire until 2013....

The Hijacking of a Nation, Part 2: The Auctioning of Former ...

In the second of a two-part exposé, whistleblower Sibel Edmonds makes a detailed case for the dangerous pervasiveness of government corruption, lobbying and foreign interests in America today. “The real rulers in Washington are invisible and exercise power from behind the scenes."- Justice Felix Frankfurter It used to be the three branches - congress, the executive, and the courts - that we considered the make-up of our nation's federal government. And some would point to the press as a possible fourth branch, due to the virtue of its influence in shaping our policies. Today, more and more people have come to view corporate and foreign lobby firms, with their preponderant clout and enormous power, as the official fourth branch of our nation's government. Not only do I agree with them, I would even take it a step further and give it a higher status it certainly deserves....

In the New Age of Luggage, Go Light, Bright and Add More Wheels

It's the age of the incredibly shrinking carry-on. With tightened security at airports, including federal restrictions on liquids and gels, the same old luggage just doesn't work as well anymore. Carry-on bags are getting smaller, while checked bags are growing to accommodate toiletry kits and other problematic items (sorry, Jamaican rum). ....

Dr Ajay Tripathi, a senior ocuplastic surgeon based in Cambridge University tells how he manages to find time for writing poetry. In these days of strife and terrorism there are those who choose to shoot from the lip! "Aao milkar aansun boyen iss banjar-oosar bhoomi mein koi pushp shanti ka khil jaaye shayad phir apni bhoomi mein Yeh kisne boi hai nafrat ki bandookon ki fasl ugi Goli par goli chalti hai Gandhi ki apni bhoomi mein." This simple piece of poetry, which is seeking answers to contemporary realities like terrorism and social consciousness isn't a sampler from a poet at large! This is the handi-work of Dr Ajay Tripathi, Senior Ocuplastic Surgeon based in Cambridge University, UK who otherwise wields a scalpel when teaching and training junior doctors about the fine art of this sub-specialist branch of cosmetic surgery....

NEW DELHI, India - She's a rodeo barrel-racing champion who runs a 180-acre ranch in Oklahoma when she's not bouncing across back roads selling farms. Dodie Gilmore is a spry 60-year-old who loves the outdoors, but when she could no longer straddle her faithful horse, River, she knew it was time for a new hip. But how could she afford it? As an independent contractor for a small Coldwell Banker real estate franchise in Durant, Okla., she knew her privately purchased health plan would never pay up to $40,000 for the operation. So she asked her boss about traveling to India where hip resurfacing alone would cost just $7,000. He not only gave her his blessing but offered to foot the bill, minus travel and hotels - making Gilmore one of the very first Americans sent overseas for surgery by an employer....

US companies consider overseas medical treatment for employees
Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 12:54:32 PM by Blog57 Team
According to the National Coalition on Health Care (NCHC), the number of Americans who are travelling overseas for medical treatment reached somewhere in the region of 500,000 last year. Asian hospitals in Thailand, India and Singapore have attracted American medical tourists seeking cosmetic surgery for a number of years but now a large number of uninsured Americans are going abroad for high-quality heart, knee and back surgery. The NCHC says outsourcing health services to the developing world is now being considered by big businesses and insurance companies. It is seen as a natural extension of the competition faced by many companies in other aspects of their business and American hospitals already import foreign doctors and nurses and some use countries such as India for X-ray readings and other diagnostics....
