Ariel Velez, 32, who graduated from Ramapo High School in 1992 and worked nearly 10 years for the Clarins Group, died after being shot four times July 10 while running from his Hawthorne, N.J., apartment. Hawthorne and Orangetown police detectives said Velez was killed during a home-invasion robbery set up by a former Clarins co-worker who knew Velez had made money stealing truckloads of perfume. Investigators found close to $150,000 in a safe hidden in Velez's apartment, where he lived with his girlfriend and her four children, police said. | | | Italy Treasury's own shop in dock for tax evasion | | Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 12:51:57 PM by Blog57 Team | | ROME (Reuters) - Italy's economy ministry is waging an all-out battle to stop tax evasion -- but even the shop on the ministry's premises does not hand out fiscal receipts to customers. An undercover reporter for "Le Iene", a popular satirical television show due to be broadcast later on Tuesday, went to the shop, intended to cater to ministry staff, several times to buy goods worth a total of 216 euros (146 pounds). Not once was he given a receipt, a widespread practice in Italy which makes it nearly impossible for tax inspectors to check shopowners' income. A spokesman for the programme said the shop, which sells a variety of items from perfumes to jewellery, does not even have a till. The economy ministry, which hopes to garner around 8 billion euros from measures against tax evasion in its belt-tightening 2007 budget, said the programme's findings showed how "common and open" some tax evasion practices were in Italy....

| | | Nigeria: FG Adopts Measures Limiting Liquids Aboard Aircraft | | Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 2:56:36 AM by Blog57 Team | | As part of measures to boost security at the nation's airports, the Federal Government has issued new rules limiting the quantity of liquids taken on board aircraft, and they take immediate effect. To this end, the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr. Harold Demuren, has written all airlines operating international flights in and out of Nigeria, informing them of the development. Dr. Demuren, who also urged airline operators to bring the new rules to the knowledge of all passengers at airports across the country, said the new security rules were to protect passengers against the new threat of liquid explosives, adding that Nigeria was merely adopting a similar step taken recently by the European Union. .... | |

| | | A day in Latin New York: Un dia en Nueva York | | Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 2:56:11 AM by Blog57 Team | | NEW YORK (AP) -- Begin with breakfast in the Dominican Republic: cafe con leche and mashed plantains. Have the churrasco -- barbecued meat -- for lunch at a Brazilian buffet. Later, snack on a Colombian fruit shake, then stop at a Mexican taqueria for dinner. After dark, hit a salsa club. You can take this tour of Latin America all in a day, without ever leaving New York City. A new book called "Nueva York: The Complete Guide to Latino Life in The Five Boroughs" shows you how. "When we have people coming in from out of town, we don't want to just show them Times Square, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty," said Carolina Gonzalez, who co-authored "Nueva York" with Seth Kugel. "We actually want to show them the real New York, and to us, part of that real New York is all these different great Latin neighborhoods." New York City is 27 percent Hispanic, according to the 2000 Census, and one of the most heavily Dominican neighborhoods is Washington Heights, in northern Manhattan.... | |

| | | Britney: Ready for the spotlight again? | | Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 10:53:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- With her decision to divorce Kevin Federline, Britney Spears appears ready for her comeback. The 24-year-old pop star filed for divorce from Federline Tuesday citing "irreconcilable differences," which probably came as no surprise to anyone. From the moment the two were married, they were tabloid targets, their every affectionate gesture or teary-eyed fight detailed in gossip magazines and on entertainment shows. The country was captivated -- apparently with equal amounts of horror and delight -- watching its pop princess pair up with a foul-mouthed, chain-smoking backup dancer from Fresno. The two even documented their domestic doings in a self-filmed reality TV show, "Britney & Kevin: Chaotic." (Watch what K-Fed said about the relationship recently; see the new thin, trendy Britney -- 1:21) The nonstop drama of their relationship derailed Spears' once-stellar career.... | |

| | | Heightened EU terror security starts | | Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 10:59:52 PM by Blog57 Team | | AIR travellers in Europe must pack water, perfumes, toothpastes and other liquids into a small plastic bag before going through airport security checkpoints under new rules that enter into force tomorrow. The rules limit the amount of liquids people may take on board planes and reflect efforts to standardise measures put in place in Europe after London authorities said in August they had foiled a plot to bomb flights bound for the US. The rules will apply throughout the 25-nation EU, and Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland. New limits to the size of carry-on bags are expected to enter into force next year. Passengers may bring on board one resealable plastic bag that is a maximum size of 1 litre in which contact lens solution, creams, and gels are stored.... | |

From Nov. 6, passengers will be allowed to carry ``small quantities'' of liquids, which must be contained in a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag. Each passenger will be allowed to carry a maximum of one liter of liquids, including drinks, creams, lotions, toothpaste, gels and perfumes. Containers mustn't exceed 100 milliliters in capacity, the statement on the department's Web site said. The same rules will apply at airports in all European Union member states, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland from Nov. 6 and are in line with U.S. and Canadian security requirements, the department added....

| | | Would 'cleaner' perfumes smell just as sweet? | | Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 1:01:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | ASHFORD, England: Proposed tighter rules for testing chemicals in Europe would affect just about everything from ballpoint pens to carpet shampoo. But for one industry in particular, the outcome of this initiative might not be so pleasing. Jorge Lee, a perfumer at Quest International, which is based in the Netherlands and is a major supplier of fragrances that operates a factory here in southern England, warned that the rules could make testing the scents that go into perfumes prohibitively expensive. The draft legislation, now under discussion at the European Parliament, "raises a lot of questions," Lee said. "Some ingredients may disappear, not necessarily because of safety reasons but because it wouldn't be economically viable for small producers to make them anymore," he said.... | |
